Effects of Chemically-Bound, Flexible Hydrocarbon Species on the Frictional Properties of Diamond Surfaces

چکیده
We have used molecular dynamics simulations to examine friction when two diamond (1 11) surfaces are placed in sliding contact. We find that flexible hydrocarbon species, chemically bound to the diamond surface, can lead to a significant reduction of the calculated friction at high loads. In addition to clarifying the effects of such species on atomic-scale friction at diamond interfaces, these simulations might also yield insight into more complicated systems, e.g., Langmuir-Blodgett films, and aid in the design of low-friction coatings.

Frictional properties of mixed fluorocarbon/hydrocarbon silane monolayers: a simulation study.
Because of small surface area to volume ratios nanoscale devices can exhibit dominant surface forces that can quickly degrade unlubricated contacting surfaces. While fluorinated materials have been widely used as lubricants, because of their low critical surface tension and high thermal and mechanical stability, fluorinated monolayer coatings, which are suitable for lubricating nanoscale device...
متن کاملFrictional and mechanical properties of diamond-like carbon-coated orthodontic brackets.
This study investigated the effects of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on frictional and mechanical properties of orthodontic brackets. DLC films were deposited on stainless steel brackets using the plasma-based ion implantation/deposition (PBIID) method under two different atmospheric conditions. As-received metal brackets served as the control. Two sizes of stainless steel archwires, 0.01...
متن کاملUpper Bound Analysis of Tube Extrusion Process Through Rotating Conical Dies with Large Mandrel Radius
In this paper, an upper bound approach is used to analyze the tube extrusion process through rotating conical dies with large mandrel radius. The material under deformation in the die and inside the container is divided to four deformation zones. A velocity field for each deformation zone is developed to evaluate the internal powers and the powers dissipated on all frictional and velocity disco...
متن کاملStudy of the Frictional Surface Damage Using Acoustic Emission Method
In this study, the change at rubbing surfaces has been investigated experimentally using an acoustic emission signal monitoring system. A steel ring is slipped on the surface of a metallic sheet to simulate frictional conditions. The mechanical disturbances caused by the movement of the ring produce stress waves propagating along the sheet surface. The out of plane displacement of the sheet su...
متن کاملVelocity dependence of friction of confined hydrocarbons.
We present molecular dynamics friction calculations for confined hydrocarbon "polymer" solids with molecular lengths from 20 to 1400 carbon atoms. Two cases are considered: (a) polymer sliding against a hard substrate and (b) polymer sliding on polymer. We discuss the velocity dependence of the frictional shear stress for both cases. In our simulations, the polymer films are very thin (approxim...
